Our mission

The EU-funded SmILE Project is working to improve life for older adults living with bone and joint conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and fractures. These conditions can affect mobility, independence, and overall well-being.

Our goal is to support healthy ageing by offering smarter ways to manage your diseases, detect problems early, enabling direct contact to your health care professionals by sharing your data, enable innovative and new treatment approaches and help you stay active and independent for longer.

The importance of data

With 26 renowned partners across Europe, we are developing smart implants and wearable devices to monitor the body and collect valuable health data without time-consuming and stressful visits at the doctors office or hospital.

As this is your data, we are enabled to supply individual feedback for you instead of generalzied information for everybody. This includes information about how well bones are healing, how much a person is moving, and whether there is strain or a risk of injury. This data will be securely shared with their doctors so they can provide better, more personalized care, right when it’s needed.

Not just patients, but partners

By developing a simple, user-friendly app, we want people to access their health information, track health progress, get tailored advice on activities and exercises, and stay connected with their doctors and care team quickly and safely.

In fact, we believe that patients should be active partners in their care, not just passive recipients.

Call for patients and patient organisations: your voice and experience matter!

Our ambition is not just to develop solutions for the people, but with them. For this reason, we are actively looking for older adults with bone and joint conditions—and for patient organisations representing them—to get involved at every stage of the project.

If you are a patient or represent a patient organisation and would like to share your experiences, test new tools, or contribute feedback, we want to hear from you! We aim to establish periodically meetings with patient boards in Portugal, Luxemburg and Germany during project lifetime for which you also can join.

By joining our project, you can:

  • Share your experience living with bone and joint conditions
  • Test early versions of our tools
  • Participate in workshops or surveys
  • Represent the voices of patients through your organisation

Your safety and privacy come first. All your health data will be handled securely and in full compliance with European data protection laws (GDPR). You always decide what information to share and with whom.

Want to help shape the future of healthy ageing? Become part of our Patient Advisory Boards in a Germany, Portugal, and Luxembourg. Registration is now open in Germany, with Portugal and Luxembourg to follow shortly.
