INNOPROOF GmbH

INNOPROOF GmbH specialises in mechanical-physical testing in the areas of breast implants, joint replacements (hip, knee and shoulder endoprosthetics), osteosynthesis, spinal implants and dental implants, as well as bone cements, coatings and surgical instruments. The testing laboratory is accredited according to ISO 17025:2018 and the test reports are internationally valid based on the MRA-ILAC agreement. INNOPROOF has only invested in state-of-the-art equipment and measuring devices that are operated under controlled, clean environmental conditions. Hydraulic drives are not used at all. Instead, electro-dynamic universal testing machines are used for fatigue testing. All measuring equipment is subject to strict maintenance and calibration intervals. Only external calibration laboratories that are also accredited to ISO 17025 are commissioned. The staff at INNOPROOF GmbH have a long and successful history in implant research, testing and biomechanics. The testing laboratory is recognised by our global customers for its fast response times and the high quality of its testing procedures and test reports. We not only work according to standards, but are also involved in the development and improvement of standards, e.g. in ISO and DIN committees as well as in ASTM committees and subcommittees.

Role within SmILE

INNO is responsible for ensuring the mechanical safety of the implants developed within the SmILE consortium. To this end, the team conducts preclinical physical testing of prototypes for load-bearing implants such as knees, hips, and plates.

One of the key challenges in integrating smart electronics into these implants is the need for technical design modifications. These changes must not compromise the mechanical integrity of the medical devices.

INNO’s role is to analyze the impact of such modifications on fracture strength and fatigue behavior. All testing will be conducted in accordance with international standards, including ASTM F382, ASTM F1264, ISO 14879-1, ISO 7206-4 and -6, and ASTM F3210.

Most orthopedic and trauma implants are metal components that have seen few innovations in recent decades. Making these implants smart could mark a significant milestone—but only if they remain mechanically stable!
